Saturday’s Passel of Potpourri

Let’s see what mischief our fellow earthlings have gotten themselves into this week. It’s Saturday and time for a break and maybe a smile or two.

Animals rule this week.

    RE: Alligator video.

A few miles south of Mount Dora, Florida, is the Deer Island Golf Club. The name of the place is a lie because there aren’t any deer on Deer Island. The reason for this is that in playing a round of 18 holes, you will encounter about 100 alligators, some ranging in size to around 15 feet long. They are not an aggressive species, but I’m not at all sure anyone has completed any in-depth psycho/clinical studies on how alligators think.

I’ve heard it said that alligators do not view humans as prey until they get to around 20 feet long, but personally, I’m not banking on anything a red neck tells me about alligators. I always give gators a wide birth.

One day, I played golf with a New York couple. On one par 3 that went over the top of an 80-foot wide canal that stretched from the end of the Tee-box to the edge of the green (150 or so yards), there must have been ten “big boys” just laying alongside the canal. New York boy had to get out of his golf cart with his camera, walk up to one of the animals to snap a few pictures. I opined to his wife that the man was either extremely brave or extremely stupid. One just never knows what these critters will do.

So I suspect we know what happened to the deer on Deer Island; the question remains, how many faces on milk cartons are missing golfers from the Mount Dora area?

We had a time of it when I lived in Fort Myers… a conservation guy came and talked to us about it… he said the only time to worry is mating time… which is now as I recall. They can get quite aggressive ..other than that stayed to themselves. We had about a 6 foot fence between us and the next community…just a simple wire fence… and they could climb that easily.
