Cloture vote on the Motion to Concur in the House Amendment to the Senate Amendment No. 3 to H.R. 5281

Purpose: Cloture votes are used in the Senate to end debate and move to a final up-or-down vote on the matter. The Senate cannot move forward until cloture is agreed to. Voting against cloture is essentially a filibuster. Because it takes 3/5ths of senators to achieve cloture, it is used as a tool by those against the matter to avoid the final simple-majority vote. UPDATE:

This morning the news is reporting the vote for approval of the Dream act as 216 to 198, the  appropriations bill  appears to have an amendment. CNN orginally posted a news story that the appropriations bill included the Dream Act.

Here tis for Dream act: Gov Track

The the 216-198 vote, mostly on partisan lines, sends the so-called DREAM Act to the Senate, where it was uncertain if supporters had the votes to overcome a certain Republican filibuster against it.

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act — or DREAM — would create a path to citizenship for immigrants who entered the United States illegally as children under the age of 16 and have lived in America for at least five years, obtained a high school or General Education Development diploma and demonstrated “good moral character,” according to a White House fact sheet CNN. Note they updated their page to reflect new vote total.

Vote Tally Count House: Social Security $250 increase fails 254-153

For individual votes: Choose which SORT you want at the bottom of the post

House Republicans on Wednesday thwarted a Democratic effort to award $250 checks to Social Security recipients facing a second consecutive year without a cost-of-living increase.

The measure was brought up under a fast-track procedure that required a two-thirds majority for passage. The 254-153 vote in favor of the bill fell short of that. Townhall

DeMint: GOP Will Filibuster DREAM Act Until Taxes and Government Funding Settled

Depressing thought if Jim is saying what I think he is saying. We have come all this way, have the majority in the House and the Republicans are going to cave and vote on the last of Obama’s monstrosities if taxes and government funding are taken care of?

My sentiment is that the Republicans caved on the tax bill. Confiscating any wealth at the time of someone’s death who has earned and had it taxed many time previously, is obscene. Large family farms and business’s that have been in the family for generations easily can have  “paper” values well over 5 Million. But then again, Con Agra will be happy to pick up these farms for pennies on the dollar. I think I detect a little discouragement perhaps over at Michelle’s place. Perhaps she fears the Dream act is going to become law as well. Michelle Malkin thinks it is suppose to be dead, but now, who knows.

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) said on Tuesday that Republicans would filibuster a bill designed to grant legal status to illegal immigrants on the condition that they either attend college or serve in the military.

DeMint said that he and his colleagues are united in their opposition to the bill, known as the DREAM Act, and any other proposals that may be brought to the floor before taxes and government funding are agreed upon. (DREAM Act is the acronym for the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act.)  CNS News
