Oregon starts Shutting Down Small Farms “to protect the people”

For all the Preppers out there in Oregon who are keeping a couple of cows around for the coming bad times, think again. For all the yuppies who follow their “farm to table” mantra of free roaming cows, mooing happily, blissfully catching some rays as they chew their cud, laying stretched out on the velvet green pasture, those days are over.

And they are using drones to roam about the countryside looking for the criminals who dare to keep a couple of cows and hunt down the perpetrators.

Here is a tale you will want to know about…..:

Small farmers are under attack in the state of Oregon, which has begun shutting down family farms throughout the state en masse under the guise of water conservation and groundwater protection.

State as bureaucrats erroneously dub small family farms as concentrated animal feeding operations, or CAFOs, in order to shut them down “for the environment.”

The rancher explains that there are two different laws that Oregon officials are using to conduct these shutdowns. One involves the state of Oregon’s broadly vague definition of a CAFO, which reads, in part, as follows:

“The State of Oregon defines CAFOs as the concentrated feeding or holding of animals or poultry, including but not limited to horse, cattle, sheep, or swine feeding areas, dairy confinement areas, and poultry and egg production facilities where the surface has been prepared with concrete, rock or fibrous material to support animals in wet weather.”

“The state of Oregon has effectively shut down small farms and market gardens on a large scale, and they’re actually sending out cease-and-desist letters to farms and they’re using satellite technology to find their victims and send them these letters that say you can’t operate,” the rancher in the video below explains.

Based on this definition, a few-acre homestead with pasture and, say, two milking cows and some chickens qualifies as a CAFO if it has any area on the property where rock or gravel is used as a pathway to get to a small barn or coop.

“The way that they have redefined CAFOs is going to impact nearly everybody,” the rancher warns about Oregon’s “updated” CAFO definition, which impacts his property as well. “Even on our property, we don’t have animals that are necessarily contained in one area (they’re roaming on pastures).”

The case was recently covered by National Review, explaining that Oregon’s government “joined forces” with the large-scale dairy industry to oppress and tyrannize Oregon’s small farmers.

Oregon wants to regulate small farms like large commercial dairies. Why? Not because of real environmental concerns, but because large commercial dairies insist that small dairies somehow have a “competitive advantage” over big ones—that is, that they don’t have to install expensive infrastructure to manage waste. (Does anyone really believe that this is what it is all about?)

But small dairies don’t need that infrastructure because the amount of waste generated can safely decompose in fields or be composted for other productive use. The state is wrapping small dairies in meaningless red tape just to please big dairies. That is protectionist, irrational and, moreover, unconstitutional. Sarah, and three other small farmers, are now teaming up with the Institute for Justice to file a lawsuit against the Oregon Department of Agriculture and save small dairy farms in the Beaver State. Source: Notes from the clip.

Of all places, Oregon would seem to be the least likely to want to institute such measures and go along with big Ag. Which leads me to think the more likely purpose is to screen out all those preppers who may be hiding a couple of Bessies in their back yard. Those small gardens must go too apparently.

Recall? Bunk’s earlier post

We wonder why the cost of food is so high?

The best of the swamp.

Many leftie control freaks decamped from California when it got expensive and went to … OREGON.  The locals call it Californication.  But they’re doing a lot of this without outside help.  Institute for Justice is on this case.  Another reason we support them.

    Wanna see a CAFO?

    or

    THIS is not:

And certainly not Ms. King in Newberg.

Market gardens are very marginal operations.  We might include them in the category of the 30% of small businesses that were killed in the lockdowns.  Do I see a theme here?

The worst CAFO operation in Oregon is a 900 Court St NE, in Salem where the hogs gather to feed at the public trough.  Look it up.

First of all, Oregon’s very Lefty….but SOME of them MUST have cows, as you suggest! In general, wouldn’t you THINK any thinking America sees through this stuff and fights it? Don’t tell me Europe’s doing better than WE are on this; at least their farmers are revolting. (in more ways than one, probably!!!!)

Honestly, Bunk…sometimes I have a day where I can’t read this stuff; it’s too darn depressing :-( And you do it too well!!!!!! 🙂

West Coast governments are out of control. But it isn’t up to me to sound the alarm; that has to be done by the citizens of those states. Our friend Mal is on his way to WA as I write this …, and I don’t understand why.

This is Part 2 of the wealth transfer that began under the Scamdemic when small businesses were being pushed under. I’ve said all along that small farms would be next. Since the Scamdemic, between 100,000 and a quarter million farms have gone down and are being bought up at bargain prices by corrupt NGOs. They’re even seizing China-owned farms under the ‘National Security’ excuse to give them to Big Ag when the environmentalist excuse won’t work.

In California, the long-term drought and fake environmental laws have broken agriculture (well, except for legal marijuana—that gets subsidized and exempt from water restrictions). The NGOs are buying up all of that land too: and you can bet as soon as they own enough it, they’ll see to it that the water shortage gets addressed. The Oligarchs also got all of Ukraine’s grain reserves in exchange for foreign aid—where is all of that going?

Since China was mentioned, they’re suffering the same drought conditions, but they’ve undertaken some massive engineering projects: the world’s largest desalination plants, upgrading their dams and levees, river diversion projects—they even announced recently that they’ve developed a hybrid strain of rice that can be grown in sea-water. All of that cost a fraction of what we spend on ‘national security’ and the Military-Industrial Complex—not to mention creating Chinese jobs and saving Chinese farmers. But China doesn’t have legal pot, so they’re considered a threat to our way of life, while we enjoy the benefits of $7 loaves of bread loaded with chemicals that the FDA ignores.

San Diego is on a drive to get rid of SDG&E and replace it with a municipal energy utility. They say it will save taxpayers money because the municipal entity will not have a profit motive, which will cut the cost to energy users by 20% right off the bat. They then bloviate about the $2 billion profit made by Sempra Energy, which owns SDG&E.

They do not mention the 20-year exclusive franchise agreement between the two parties, which SDG&E paid $90 million for four years ago (and for which it was the only bidder) . The city sued to reject the bid because no one else submitted a bid, lost and was required to give the franchise to SDG&E. The city then sued to cancel the franchise two years ago and lost again, although there is a clause that allows the city to bail out at the 10-year mark , six years from now.

They will buy the SDG&E infrastructure, power lines, switching stations, computer systems, etc, for $90 million. That won’t cost the city or taxpayers anything because it will be financed by a bond. (Politicians have convinced voters that bonds are magic, free, money.) What about the money SDG&E paid for the unused portion of the franchise agreement?

Nor do they mention that they already formed a municipal power provider which sells electricity as an alternative to SDG&E, delivering the electricity over SDG&E power lines. Users pay separately for power and delivery, all on one bill delivered by SDG&E. Buying electricity from the city would be cheaper, they promised, because not selling for profit would make that power less expensive, and it would be 100% “green power” because the altruistic city would only buy power generated by wind, solar and other renewable means.

When it started SDG&E customers had to “opt out” of switching to the city for power, so I allowed our power to be switched, just to see how it would go. Initially our power was, indeed, 2% cheaper than SDG&E. What happened to the “cheaper by 20% because we don’t make the 20% profit like the for-profit power companies do”? It didn’t last long. Three months after the switch, the cost of the electricity went up. I checked and sure enough it was 5% higher then SDG&E. I switched providers post haste.

Sorry to be so wordy, but the full story takes time to tell. Government obfuscates and tells lies, They do not do things at less expense because of the “evil profit motive” as claimed.

I appreciate the story as it shows the thinking and lack of reasoning those in power use to supposedly get rid of the “profit” of businesses.. When did the government ever do something better and cheaper? Yes, and all that green stuff should really work out.. Good luck

      Bill,

How about the “free” residential solar panel scheme pushed by states in which a 25 year lien on your property is marketed as free. So much for economics 101 not being taught in high school never mind college. Maybe basic reading skills would help in deciphering the fine print.

I lived in Vista (North San Diego County) for several years.  SDG&E used to complain because they could not park their trucks anywhere in San Diego County without later finding someone had taken a baseball bat to the truck, flattened tires, or sabotaged the power plant.  I know this because my buddy from the Marines was their transportation officer for a decade.  I guess the rate increases were designed to replace rolling stock.

As long as they have the power to twist the law they will continue to do so. It is not hyperbole to say there is literally no power, including SCOTUS, to stop or overrule this witch and her overreach. It is not unreasonable to believe the democrats and the left will not allow this election to be lost to any republican, Trump or not. Never forget comrade Stalin’s truism: It’s not who votes it’s who counts the votes. IMO

Corporatism and Socialism come together under dual clouds of greed and magical thinking to produce…………………….fascism. Or at least that is how Benito Mussolini would characterize the situation.

So, folks who own small holdings are denied the opportunity to use the potential value of their land and resources, and labor and are thusly denied their property rights without due process.

This happens all the time in the West. Priests of Environmentalism descend on rural America and declare private property to be the sole habitat of an endangered or threatened species. They then deny the lawful owner of such land to be a criminal for using the land as God intended. And do so without just compensation. And that, my friends is an unlawful taking under our Constitution.

But who cares? Not the Progressive New Left. The Constitution only serves to mask their cultural revolution from scrutiny and control in their book. Magical thinking must prevail at any cost. Or so says their Godless religion.

When growing up, I spent a number of summer weeks at a small ranch near Poteet, Texas owned by my grand -uncle Bart (on my mom’s side).

I also spent a number of weeks visiting my dad’s side of the family in Oklahoma (and, therefore, driving past the stock yards in Fort Worth).

There was no comparison of the smell of those stock yards (where thousands of cattle were loaded to trains bound for whereever) against the smell of that small ranch.

So, I am not buying the story behind the CAFO sh*t.
