Sunday respite: Living in Kerry’s ‘Lotus Land’

I really reached back for this Sunday respite. I wanted something to represent this totally bizarre universe as presented to us by John Kerry and his remarks that we are living in the most peaceful time in all of recorded history. Something like that.  No doubt I had owned Frankie Lane’s “Moonlight Gambler” thus the memory recall of the “B” side. We are on one grand Odyssey. You have the gist. “Lotus Land” – yes that is where we are.

From the Urban Dictionary:

Term comes from the land of the lotus eaters in The Odyssey, where people ate lotus flowers and “A single taste of this native fruit made my soldiers forget everything they had ever know; where they were from, where they were going, everything.”

1956 Columbia records flip side to Frankie’s big hit that year of “Moonlight Gambler”

Lotus Land.

Homer’s Odyessey:

“Those who ate the honey-sweet lotus fruit no longer wished to bring back word to us, or sail for home. They wanted to stay with the Lotus-eaters, eating the lotus, forgetting all thoughts of return.”
