Let’s see what mischief our fellow earthlings have gotten themselves into this week. Satire, Memes and Mayhem. Nonsense and animals as well. Time to take a break from the madness.
Enjoy!

The Bee is priceless. The penguin knows there are 2 groups of animals: the Quick and the Dead. 🙂 All the animals – so fun. I’ve watched a flock of barn swallows drive a hawk away from their nests with a ballet of teamwork that gradually moved the predator farther and farther out.
The tip of South America is a challenging and deadly passage where “giant waves sweep the globe unimpeded by any land.” Read the voyage of the stranded explorer Ernest Shackleton (Endurance) from the desolate Elephant Island through that strait to South Georgia in late fall. In a 22-ft open boat with a makeshift cover deck. THIS thing (do check out the pick and gasp):

Near the end they were in a storm so bad they felt like a cork popping around in a wave. They looked up to see a break in the storm, with moonlight shining across the curly white edge of a cloud — only to realize it was a 100-ft wave cresting over their boat. A big naval vessel went down that night, along with 1 or 2 other ships. Miraculously, they arrived at South Georgia with a broken rudder.

Shackleton –Its a fascinating tale..
Even worse was that they landed on the opposite side of the island after all they had endured so had to cross the land.
I remember reading about the lives of all the crew of the ordeal and rather a sad tale as I recall. Enjoyed the pics on the link…
It is a strange and interesting world in which we live…. 🙂

The landing on the “wrong” side is said to be a decision by Shackleton in the storms because he was concerned they’d shoot right past it and not see it. Looking at a map, I can see how this is a real concern. He wanted the best chance of running into it and expected to sail around it, but couldn’t without the rudder. Can you imagine being the NAVIGATOR and having to do your best to keep the navigation book dry enough to use? We have no idea.
