MSNBC sinks to new low, blames Chris Stevens for his own death

Frankly, after an hour of Fox in the morning, one has about as much news as one is going to get. So I wandered over to MSNBC for a morning charge, usually more potent than a double Expresso. In one of the most absurd diatribes regarding the Benghazi attacks, it is now Stevens fault for his death. Just for the memory since apparently the media and most people have a short one:

Al-Qaeda flag flying high over Libya – thanks Obama Posted bunkerville  November 4, 2011, more than a year before the attack and murders. And you want to tell me that Al-Qaeda was not involved???

Here we go: Sadly, the flag of al-Qaeda is not just being flown at the Benghazi courthouse.  According to eyewitnesses, it is now being displayed all over Benghazi.  The following is an account from an eyewitness that has seen the flag flying over the Benghazi courthouse for himself….

It was here at the courthouse in Benghazi where the first spark of the Libyan revolution ignited. It’s the symbolic seat of the revolution; post-Gaddafi Libya’s equivalent of Egypt’s Tahrir Square. And it was here, in the tumultuous months of civil war, that the ragtag rebel forces established their provisional government and primitive, yet effective, media center from which to tell foreign journalists about their “fight for freedom.”

But according to multiple eyewitnesses—myself included—one can now see both the Libyan rebel flag and the flag of al Qaeda fluttering atop Benghazi’s courthouse.

According to one Benghazi resident, Islamists driving brand-new SUVs and waving the black al Qaeda flag drive the city’s streets at night shouting, “Islamiya, Islamiya! No East, nor West,” a reference to previous worries that the country would be bifurcated between Gaddafi opponents in the east and the pro-Gaddafi elements in the west.

Now back to the news of this morning:

In a disgusting display of just how far the liberal media will go to preserve Hillary Clinton’s presidential prospects, Katty Kay has blamed Ambassador Chris Stevens for his own death, while letting Hillary off the hook.

On today’s Morning Joe, the BBC’s Kay called the newly-released Senate report on the Benghazi attack “sad” because it showed that Stevens was “fallible.” Kay claimed that “he didn’t ask for and even rejected some of the security he might have had.” This flies in the face of the report’s findings that “State, then under Hillary Clinton, refused requests to boost security despite warnings from the CIA and its own staff about the danger of militant attacks.”

There really are no words to describe what Katty Kay did in seeking to shift blame away from Hillary and onto a brave ambassador who because of Clinton’s neglect is not here to defend himself.  But let’s try “contemptible” for starters.

Video over at NewsBusters

JOE SCARBOROUGH: [Libya] was just a rat’s nest of terrorists in and out. There was anarchy across the country and if you’re Secretary Clinton and you get cables from the ambassador saying we need additional securityyou know, you act on that. It’s not like it’s just another outpost. It’s like one of the hottest outposts out there. I think that is a fair criticism and I don’t know that Hillary Clinton ever answered that.

KATTY KAY: Yeah. I mean I think there’s always been two important points about this story and neither of them frankly are political. One is the intelligence. Why did U.S. intelligence analysts miss what was clearly a buildup of insecurity in Benghazi? The British ambassador for example had been targeted in his car just before the attack on the U.S. compound. We knew that this becoming increasely volatile. And the other was the security issue. Why were outposts in an area, as you suggest, that was difficult, where the Americans had just completed a war. Why were they not properly defended? And this report in a way is very sad because Chris Stevens, who was the ambassador who was killed who was clearly a brave and honorable man, was also fallible, and perhaps didn’t ask for, rejected even, some of the security he might have had.

I notice that the transcript presented here ends very abruptly. I watched the show yesterday morning but I can’t recall what was said after the comments cited here. Is there a more complete transcript available?

In any event, there can be no doubt that Ms Kay was referring to reports from last spring:

Ham phoned Stevens and asked if the embassy needed a special security team from the U.S. military. Stevens told Ham it did not, the officials said.

Weeks later, Stevens traveled to Germany for an already scheduled meeting with Ham at AFRICOM headquarters. During that meeting, Ham again offered additional military assets, and Stevens again said no, the two officials said.

“He didn’t say why. He just turned it down,” a defense official who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the subject told McClatchy. — Ambassador Stevens twice said no to military offers of more security, U.S. officials say

This is a typical hatchet job by Breitbart. The characteristic duplicity displayed here will be exposed before the day is over, but that won’t matter to those who hysterically scream about these manufactured lies. There are no words to describe the shameful manner in which the ambassador’s death is being exploited across the right-wing blogosphere for partisan gain and profit. But let’s try “contemptible” for starters.

If you read the whole thing, the state dept already turned down additional security, thus Stevens would have at one point requested aid contrary to the state depts opinion. One doesn’t cross Hillary. But this was just one point in time. Later he did request aid. Ferret it out yourself, you can find the whole thing.

Disgusting but not unexpected! Either Kay did not read the reports of Stevens begging for more security or decided to ignore it for political reasons. The propaganda arm is in full protection mode.

From what I read he was reluctant to accept offers of aid from the military once the smartest woman in the world had refused his request. One way or another, it would seem, he sacrificed his life and those of three others for political expediency. At the risk of seeming callous, there is nothing new under the sun. Maybe one day this pitiful excuse for a real woman will get her just deserts.

I think it is probably true that Mr. Stevens deserves some criticism. I personally didn’t think that he was using sound judgment being in Benghazi given all that he knew about the al-Qaeda presence and the security issues, but it is as you have said: we will never know what conversations Stevens had with his boss, Hillary Clinton (who picked him for this assignment).

Kay is not only full of herself, but she if full of something else too. The intelligence was clear, and that intelligence was communicated up the chain of command. The media may try to lay this debacle at the feet of intelligence analysis’s, but I frankly don’t see it.

    Good post!

Thanks. We still don’t know for sure what Steven’s mission was. Best guess it had something to do with Syria. Otherwise, why so hush, hush. Why all the CIA? I, for one, if in Steven’s shoes, would not have stayed there for a millisecond. Who was he suppose to meet with that night? He had to know how dangerous it was.

One of my reading resources is a professor from Israel who wrote about what Stevens was doing in Benghazi. Apparently, the US CIA provided somewhere in the neighborhood of 20,000 portable surface to air missiles. After Libya’s fall, Clinton suddenly became concerned that these weapons would end up in Syria. Lebanon and Saudi interests showed up to negotiate with the Libyans’ in the purchase of these weapons, and Stevens was there attempting to negotiate a return of these weapons to US control. Stevens was killed for more than being a US Ambassador. Now if this is even partly true, then one should have no doubt why Clinton doesn’t want this information widely known—but we ought to wonder why in the hell would we ever sell shoulder fired surface to air missiles to any Middle Eastern person. Moreover, if only partly true, such a stupid act on our part suggests that we probably deserve whatever befalls us.

Thanks for the update. Makes sense that it was similar to the Iran Contra deal. I add the intent far different, but could be one big headache for Hillary.
