Boston Schools suspend testing for advanced learning – too many Whites and Asians

And they wonder why the US educational standards are the worst for a 1st world country. Then they turn around and say we must lower standards while allowing schools to turn into businesses instead of education. Of course figuring out how to educate all the kids might be a better approach…….

A selective program for high-performing fourth, fifth and sixth graders in Boston has suspended enrollment due to the pandemic and concerns about equity in the program, GBH News has learned.

Superintendent Brenda Cassellius recommended the one-year hiatus for the program, known as Advanced Work Classes, saying the district would not proceed with the program for new students next year.

“There’s been a lot of inequities that have been brought to the light in the pandemic that we have to address,” Cassellius told GBH News. “There’s a lot of work we have to do in the district to be antiracist and have policies where all of our students have a fair shot at an equitable and excellent education.”

New students will be admitted in the fourth grade by standards to be determined at the school level, according to a BPS spokesman.

There will be no new students admitted in the fifth or sixth grades, the spokesman said, but those already in advanced work will be allowed to continue.

A district analysis of the program found that more than 70 percent of students enrolled in the program were white and Asian, even though nearly 80 percent of all Boston public school students are Hispanic and Black.

    It’s a messed up country we live in when instead of trying to improve the education of people who are not doing as well we just hide the fact that there are problems with some people in the first place. We make the other students dumber instead of lifting everybody up and this is what is known as progress in today’s America.

    NOW WE HAVE THE WHITE DREADLOCKED BERKELEY SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENT WHO HAS BEEN TAKING HIS 2 YEAR OLD TO A PRICEY PRIVATE SCHOOL EVERY DAY AS HE DECLARES BERKELEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS MUST STAY CLOSED TO PROTECT THE TEACHERS.

    THIS and things like your story here, Bunk, are not going unheard.
    AND WE ALL KNOW THE LEFTWING MEDIA WON’T CARRY STORIES LIKE THIS BUT THEY ARE NOW….THEY ARE WHEN A COMMUNITY WITH ONLY 10% REPUBLICANS (BERKELEY) IS SCREECHING ABOUT THE BOARD PRESIDENT’S BEHAvIOR.

    AS THESE OUTRAGEOUS THINGS START TO ACTUALLY AFFECT THE LEFT, WAIT AND SEE….

      Well, the Democrats have thrusted the stake into the heart of parents… we shall soon see how much their offspring mean to them. I suspect they will simply replace their CA Gov with someone equal to his incompetence.

        I think we’re seeing how much their offspring mean………..they are fired up at all the schools remaining closed. And no, I think Newsom’s replacement will be nothing like him BUT I will say I heard 3 Reps might run, which, of course, is party splitting, which means another Newsom WILL Win, which is why Nunes at CPAC said we’ll win if the party STAYS TOGETHER in CA. That is what he was talking about.
        Other than McCarthy, who I have NEVER been able to stand…CA has elected some really good people here….just doesn’t get discussed too much.
        Also, there’s a recall just now starting for the HIDEOUS LIBERAL new DA …Gascon..

        I keep reminding Conservatives….even Dems don’t want police defunded, even Dems don’t want schools closed while their ‘leaders’ take their kids to pricey schools…
        Not many are listening to me, but I’m thinking 2022 will be THE biggest Republican landslide in history.

    This country offers equal opportunity, not equal results. Don’t hold your breath for solutions until government officials first offer a proper diagnosis of the problem. We haven’t done that yet, and here we are in year 245 of the “grand experiment.” If this country is successful (pick any area), it is not because of government, but despite government. Granted, there are some issues that we simply can’t resolve. We can’t fix teen pregnancy, single mothers living in public housing ignoring their infants while working on creating more … unless you make it more (not less) painful to produce bastards. We can’t give a spark of intelligence to any child (irrespective of race or ethnicity) who’s been emotionally abandoned by its mother for its entire life.

    We seem stuck on this notion that one size (education) fulfills every expectation. It doesn’t. The proof of this can be found in the (lack of) ability of recently graduated high school students. How does one graduate from a 12-year program with no more than a 5th-grade reading/comprehension ability? These kids have sat inside a public school for twelve years and are dumber at age 18 than they were at age 6.

    Despite these well-document results, we have never achieved the revelation of first determining a child’s intellectual aptitudes and then asking them, given their unique aptitude and interests, “Where do you want to go?” Hint: Jose Mendoza, who can’t add numbers past single digits, probably doesn’t want to go to Ohio State for a pre-med degree — but Jose may enjoy fixing engines. If we’re going to spend gazillions on educational programs, shouldn’t we at least attempt to find meaningful training/preparation for Jose (and others like him) so that he won’t decide that banging Josita and running in the hood with Marco is his only lot in life? Now, if Jose does prefer to run the hood and creating babies with Josita that turn out just like him … there’s a school for him, too. Reform school.

    We have but two choices: we can either get our heads out of where the sun never shines or reconcile ourselves to expanded social problems rather than solving them.

      I agree. . vocational opportunities should ranks equally in importance.. We need the bright brights to heal the sick and get us to mars. If God grants the gift of intelligence are we to simply throw it away? That apparently is the track we are on.
      To be in the presence of someone “learned” is a treat and not to be despised.

    It’s not just racist, calling some students “high performing” is also demeaning to the students of all races who don’t achieve their label. I think they should also do-away with grades and replace them with “Attended”. Intellectual privilege benefits a small segment of society who become successful doctors, lawyers, scientists, engineers, etc. at the expense of those of us with average and low intelligence.

      We sure don’t want the best doctors lawyers, scientists, etc……no, let us become foragers once again…hunters and gathers…..and die at the age of about 22..that will even the playing field and reduce over population with climate change. Perfect.

    Saw an article on CNBC that this period means “stress beyond the breaking point” for teachers. I think they should all retire immediately and be put on medication.

    “Equity” is a policy that can only be met by using the lowest common denominator. If one person cannot pass the test, make the test easier until everyone can pass it. In teaching a class, teach only what the stupidest person can understand. If the standard is so high that one person cannot be admitted, lower the standard until it admits everyone.

    The latter is why US Navy warships keep colliding with cargo ships in the Pacific, and a ship was disabled when its crew forgot to refill the main drive gearbox with lubricating oil. It’s why the Army and Marines have not won a ground war in more than seventy years. It’s why a nuclear reactor was decommissioned when its steam generator, which is 19th century technology, needed to be replaced and no company in this nation had the capability to build it.

    “Equity” creates a nation of idiots.

      Add the pride in one’s effort… it was felt a job performance reflected upon oneself… Toward the end of my career, I found new hires rarely felt that way. It was a job job as they would opine.

    The solution is to criminalize teacher unions, round up, arrest and deport all teacher union officials along with the destroyers populating the US Department of Education starting with the Czar on down, confiscate any remaining union monies and use it to re-educate public school teachers as to how their union and their dues are diametrically opposed to doing good for the students (should they be in the dark about these FACTS).Meanwhile the majority of public school teachers are on a paid virus hiatus replete with full benefits, paid for by our property taxes. The road to hell is not paved with good intentions, the road to hell is paved with our tax dollars and our children’s future. All is lost and we should know this.
    On a personal level my son and daughter-in-law both teach in a private school for special ed students. They are physically in school while the students are taught remotely from home while my grandson attends the YMCA tutoring program for children whose parents go to work. So with 70-75% of their property taxes of $14,000 are used to fund the sanctuary state of NJ’s Dept of education (read most of that money going towards funding poorly run and administrated inner city school districts) they pay nearly $700 per month ((20 days) for the Y, none of which I believe is claimed as a tax deduction.
    Meanwhile Little Miss Muffet will sit quietly on her tuffet, knowing full well what’s good for her, with the country we once knew, in free fall, once again involved militarily in the Middle East.

    When you consider that the United States spends $720-billion annually educating our children (public education only), then one begins to wonder why American children are not the best and brightest children in the entire world. One might possibly conclude that since America’s children aren’t the best and brightest the world has to offer, that (a) such expenditures are a complete waste of money and that (b) our effort in public education is an embarrassing failure of epic proportions. I’ll simply ask this one question and then let readers wrestle with the answer(s). Here goes: If we truly care about our nation’s children, and if we really do care about America’s future, then why are we not affording every single child, at every age level, in every grade in school, in every one of our 98,127 public schools, “advanced learning”?

    Culture. The solution to this madness is universal school vouchers. When progressive insanity captures your monopoly reeducation camp you need to flee. Money following the child to appropriate educational options solves this level of stupidity over night.
