I know it sounds crazy, but when I heard that the poverty rate had hit new heights, I recalled an old post of mine. By the time one adds up all the entitlements, one is better off not being in the Middle Class. Here we go:
In Entitlement America, The Head Of A Household Of Four Making Minimum Wage Has More Disposable Income Than A Family Making $60,000 A Year
You can do as well working one week a month at minimum wage as you can working $60,000-a-year, full-time, high-stress job.
Amid a still struggling economy, more people in America fell below the poverty line last year, according to new census data released Tuesday.
About 46.2 million people are now considered in poverty, 2.6 million more than last year.
The government defines the poverty line as income of $22,314 a year for a family of four and $11,139 for an individual. The Office of Management and Budget updates the poverty line each year to account for inflation. Finance Yahoo
Earlier Post: One parent of three making $14,000 a year has mmore disposable income than a family making $60,000 a year
Emmerich analyzes disposable income and economic benefits among several key income classes and comes to the stunning (and verifiable) conclusion that “a one-parent family of three making $14,500 a year (minimum wage) has more disposable income than a family making $60,000 a year.” And that excludes benefits from Supplemental Security Income disability checks. America is now a country which punishes those middle-class people who not only try to work hard, but avoid scamming the system.

According to the “poverty index” we qualify for food stamps.
I founded our church’s outreach for people that needed help for various things like utility bills, etc. After making calls for about 6 months I had to quit. It was normal to show up for a home visit for someone seeking help that owned waaaaay more toys than we did. We don’t have cable, fancy cell phones, flat screen TV’s, etc. They sure do, though. Keep in mind these were not parishioners but the public at large.
These people made the rounds of all the churches which took about 3 months. With all the government money, free food at food banks, and free meals everyday at one church or another they lived way better than hubby and I do.
I really loved the Thanksgiving and Christmas basket programs. These bums would sign up at 3 or 4 churches and get baskets from all of them.
The thing is – the people who really needed help rarely received it because they were too proud to ask.

I am with you on this on Adrienne. What I also love it that folks on my block enjoy all that you have described, yet prefer not to buy Health Insurance, yet are on CHIPS and Medicaid. Bet almost all of the above are on Medicaid.

I wonder how many people on Main Street realize this, Bunker? I think the vast majority of people believe we need to help the poor and they support government programs to do that. But, I think they would be shocked to learn that the poor are receiving so much help that the poor have an equal or higher quality of life than many in the middle class. That is not what the people on Main Street think they are supporting.
Great post!
