Dem State Attorneys General to police Climate Change dissent

Looks like the States are making an ominous effort to go after free speech. Anyone who denies Climate Change could find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Forget that we need energy as the very lifeblood of industry and sustaining our very day to day existence. Why are we going about this suicidal course? Boggles the mind.

This from the Washington Times:  A coalition of Democratic attorneys general in 16 states announced Tuesday an unprecedented campaign to pursue companies that challenge the catastrophic climate change narrative, raising concerns over free speech and the use of state authority to punish political foes.

“So he apparently has decided that anyone who disagrees with him on ‘global warming’ should face investigations, fines and penalties and be silenced,” Mr. Morano said.

“There have been those who have raised the question, ‘Aren’t you interfering with people’s First Amendment rights?’” said Mr. Schneiderman. “The First Amendment, ladies and gentlemen, does not give you the right to commit fraud.”

Standing beside former Vice President Al Gore, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said the state officials are committed to “working together on key climate-related initiatives,” including queries into whether fossil fuel companies like ExxonMobil have committed fraud by deceiving the public and shareholders about the impact of man-made carbon dioxide emissions.

Two states — California and New York — already have launched probes into ExxonMobil, while attorneys general from Massachusetts and the Virgin Islands indicated Tuesday that they would follow suit. Virgin Islands Attorney General Claude Walker, an independent, is the only non-Democrat involved in the campaign, called AGs United for Clean Power.

Obama: ‘We are going to have to change the way the media reports

We know that before Obama ends his regime that everything will be done to control the media. Here we have Fox in the crosshairs. But make no mistake, they will be coming after us lowly bloggers. I am on the road back to the Bunker, so may not get a chance to make my rounds. Sirius radio should keep me in the know. As of now, I can listen to it via the radio. Here we go:

FULL REMARKS: Obama Swipes at Fox: Pushing Narrative That Poor People Are ‘Leeches’. President Obama: ‘We’re Going to Have to Change How the Media Reports’. President Obama Destroys Fox News For Spreading Negative Stereotypes About The Poor!
President Obama spoke at a poverty forum at Georgetown University earlier today and took a swipe at Fox News for, as he put it, perpetuating certain stereotypes about poor people. The president addressed media efforts to “suggest the poor are sponges, leeches,” and that they’re “lazy” and undeserving.”
OBAMA SLAMS FOX NEWS President jabs network over portrayal of poverty
“If you watch Fox News on a regular basis,” Obama said, “it is a constant menu––they will find folks who make me mad, I don’t know where they find them.”

He’s referring to the “I just want a free Obamaphone” stuff that adds to a narrative, the president lamented, that needs to change, because that affects “people’s impressions of what it’s like to struggle in this economy.”

FEC moving to control and regulate Internet, blogs, News media

So far, it has been the FCC that we have had to keep our eye on. Now, we move on to the FEC. The Federal Election Comission will be on the case of with so-called “new rules.” Th usual Friday dump. It’s Saturday, so I give you a bit of a refresher of parts of previous posts. The Internet is the last bastion of true free speech by the everyday Joe and Jane.  Enjoy – here is the latest:

Via Washington Examiner:

In a surprise move late Friday, a key Democrat on the Federal Election Commission called for burdensome new rules on Internet-based campaigning, prompting the Republican chairman to warn that Democrats want to regulate online political sites and even news media like the Drudge Report.

Democratic FEC Vice Chair Ann M. Ravel announced plans to begin the process to win regulations on Internet-based campaigns and videos, currently free from most of the FEC’s rules. “A reexamination of the commission’s approach to the internet and other emerging technologies is long over due,” she said.

The power play followed a deadlocked 3-3 vote on whether an Ohio anti-President Obama Internet campaign featuring two videos violated FEC rules when it did not report its finances or offer a disclosure on the ads. The ads were placed for free on YouTube and were not paid advertising.

FCC to police and question media, websites regarding content

The Federal Communications Commission is planning a broad probe of political speech across  media platforms, an unprecedented move that raises serious First Amendment  concerns.

The FCC’s proposed “Multi-Market Study of Critical Information Needs,” which  is set to begin a field test in a single market with an eye toward a  comprehensive study in 2014, would collect a remarkably wide range of  information on demographics, point of view, news topic  selection, management style and other factors in news organizations both in and  out of the FCC’s traditional purview.

“In this study, the FCC will delve into the editorial discretion of newspapers,  web sites and radio and TV stations,” Hudson Institute Fellow Robert McDowell,  who served as a FCC commissioner from 2009 to 2013, told The Daily Caller.  “This starts sticking the government’s nose into what has traditionally been  privileged and protected ground. Regardless of one’s political stripes, one  should be concerned.”

The airwaves regulator would also subject news producers in all media to  invasive questioning about their work and content.

McChesney strongly believes in government control of the medium and the message.

In a 2000 article — titled “Journalism, Democracy, and Class Struggle”  in Review, McChesney laid out his goal of using media as a tool for socialist change:

Our job is to make media reform part of our broader struggle for democracy, social justice, and, dare we say it, socialism…

In 2009, McChesney said the following about capitalism and the media:

  • “Any serious effort to reform the media system would have to necessarily be part of a revolutionary program to overthrow the capitalist system itself.”
  • “There is no real answer but to remove brick by brick the capitalist system itself, rebuilding the entire society on socialist principles.”
  • “We need to do whatever we can to limit capitalist propaganda, regulate it, minimalize it, and perhaps even eliminate it.”

NBC, Universal, Comcast cave to FCC Diversity

January 14, 2011 — bunkerville

NBCU will strive to ensure the presentation of diverse viewpoints by seeking the expanded participation of minorities on its news and public affairs programming,” the companies promised in writing to black leaders. “To advance this goal, NBCU will consider suggestions from the African American Advisory Council of individuals who could be considered for such participation.”

The media giants also agreed to allow black leaders to have influence over NBC’s news programming. In addition to programming “diversity,” the Comcast and NBC Universal Memorandums of Understanding with different race-specific civil rights groups promise “diversity” in company employment, in supplier and vendor procurement and in “philanthropy and community investment.”

FCC Commissioner Wants to Test the ‘Public Value’ of Every Broadcast Station

December 3, 2010

This is an abbreviated portion found over at CNS:

American journalism is in “grave peril,” FCC Commissioner Michael Copps says, and to bolster “traditional media,” he said the Federal Communications Commission should conduct a “public value test” of every commercial broadcast station at relicensing time.

In a speech at the Columbia University School of Journalism in New York on Thursday, Copps also said station relicensing should happen every four years instead of the current eight.

“If a station passes the Public Value Test, it of course keeps the license it has earned to use the people’s airwaves,” Copps said. “If not, it goes on probation for a year, renewable for an additional year if it demonstrates measurable progress. If the station fails again, give the license to someone who will use it to serve the public interest.”

Ever since Barack Obama became president, prominent conservatives have warned about liberal efforts to squelch conservative and Christian talk-radio.

NPR Vivian Schiller Key Architect of FCC Govt Takeover of the News

October 26, 2010 — bunkerville

Schiller, a New York Times executive, is one of a few dozen power players working with the Federal Communications Commission, the Federal Trade Commission and a leftist group called Free Press to “reinvent journalism.” That’s how the FTC describes it. The FCC calls what they are doing the “Future of Journalism.” Free Press, a think tank funded by leftist billionaire George Soros, among others, calls it “the new public media.”

With now-former NPR analyst Juan Williams suitably splattered across the evening news after politically incorrect comments he made on Fox News, Schiller can return to her real passion – the creation of a national network to ensure that in the future, you get your news from the government in general and NPR in particular. Keep Apologizing Vivian, we got your number , who explained in a speech to the NPR board of directors in 2009, it is public radio’s responsibility to fill the gap in journalism left by dying local television stations and newspapers

FCC Chairman Ducks Question About FCC Official’s First Amendment Views

November 5, 2009 — bunkerville

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, after testifying at a congressional hearing on texting while driving Wednesday, was asked whether he agreed with Mark Lloyd’s views on the First Amendment. He refused to say if he agrees with the FCC’s Chief Diversity Officer Czar Mark Lloyd that freedom of speech is an “exaggeration” and that concerns about free speech serve only as a “distraction” from policy debates.

Instead of answering the question, Genachowski said he would rather focus on drivers who are distracted by text-messaging.

CNSNews.com: Your Chief Diversity Office, Mark Lloyd, wrote in 2006 that freedom of speech had become an exaggeration and that free speech concerns served to distract from policy debates. Do you agree with those statements?Genachowski: We’re here today to talk about distracted driving, and today is a day to focus attention on that issue and that’s what we’ve done.
In his book, Mark Lloyd said his approach to communications was inspired by left-wing radical Saul Alinsky.

“We looked to successful political campaigns and organizers as a guide, especially the civil rights movement, Saul Alinsky, and the campaign to prevent the Supreme Court nomination of the ultra-conservative jurist Robert Bork. From those sources we drew inspiration and guidance,” Lloyd wrote.

Alinksy, author of the book “Rules for Radicals,” wrote that his methods were intended to guide people intent on overturning the American system.

“’The Prince’ was written by Machiavelli for the Haves on how to hold power,” Alinsky explained. “’Rules for Radicals’ is written for the Have-Nots on how to take it away.”

UK Liberty GB party candidate Weston arrested for quoting Winston Churchill

Great Britain reaches a new low in political correctness. So now Winston Churchill would be arrested if he were alive today. Winston had it right back in the day. But forget that. The thought police are in full control.

Via Islam Watch

Quoting from the great WWII statesman Winston Churchill’s literary work, for which he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953, has become a criminal offence in the UK—as it seems.

Paul Weston, chairman of the UK’s Liberty GB party and a candidate in the 22 May European Parliament Elections, was arrested by the British police on 26 April for quoting a passage from Winston Churchill’s book.

At around 2pm, Weston was addressing the passers-by on the street from the steps of Winchester Guildhall with a megaphone. He quoted the following passage about Islam from Churchill book, The River War:

“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the faith: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith.”

Reportedly a woman, who found the passage “disgusting”, came out of the Guildhall and called the police.

Responding to her call, six or seven police officers arrived and questioned Weston for about 40 minutes.

At about 3pm, they arrested and searched him, and took him away in a police van.

Obama threatens veto on bill to delay IRS from muzzling his political opponents

It is going to be hardball from here on in while Obama sits on his throne at the WH. Will we ever get him out? Time will tell. But Chicago politics are going to be on steroids for the upcoming fall election. Buckle up folks, we are in for one heck of a ride.

“Despite the administration’s insistence that ‘there’s nothing to see here,’ the committee has found evidence demonstrating that right-leaning groups were targeted to an extent far beyond what was reported by the Inspector General.

Weasel Zippers brings us the news:

BREAKING: Obama Threatens To Veto Bill Delaying IRS From Muzzling His Political Opponents…

Some background on the bill:

Congressman Dave Camp, R-Midland, has introduced legislation prohibiting for one year the Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service from issuing or finalizing proposed 501(c)(4) regulations issued last November.

Treasury’s proposed rules would significantly alter 501(c)(4) tax-exempt organization activities and restrict First Amendment rights. Other tax-exempt organizations, including labor unions, would not be subject to the same rules. A letter recently signed by more than 50 conservative and free market groups expressed similar concerns and called on Congress to block the proposed regulations. Camp, who has led the House Ways and Means Committee investigation into the IRS’s abuse of conservative groups, released the following statement:

“Despite the administration’s insistence that ‘there’s nothing to see here,’ the committee has found evidence demonstrating that right-leaning groups were targeted to an extent far beyond what was reported by the Inspector General. Our investigation is still ongoing and the committee has not received all the requested documents. It is premature to publish new rules before getting all of the facts. The Administration’s proposed rules openly target groups that are exercising their First Amendment rights. We cannot allow these draft regulations to go into effect. Congress must make sure every American’s right to participate and engage in civic debate is protected, and this legislation will provide some much-needed assurance that IRS targeting and surveillance will not continue.

“Additionally, I am disappointed by reports that the Department of Justice had decided – without conducting a serious investigation – that it will not to pursue criminal charges in the IRS’s intentional targeting of conservative groups. I have long said that we will follow the facts of this case wherever the facts lead us – and this case is far from closed.”

Chuck Schumer on1st Amendment ‘No amendment is absolute’

During a debate on the Senate floor July 16, 2012, Chucky makes remarks about the DISCLOSE Act, legislation that would circumvent and restrict the First Amendment. Of course, he would not be making these comments if his wish comes true. The Blaze has a good breakdown and analysis of what he posits, but I think you have the hang of it. Freedom for thee, but not so much for me. The Progressives are now out and about with what would have been totally unheard of just a generation ago. The First Amendment was considered sacrosanct. The very essence of our Republic. For many of us, these good old days are becoming a distant memory. The next generation will not have even that if the Obama plan comes to fruition. Note his rightous tone as he comes to take away our freedom.

Here‘s the transcript of Schumer’s remarks, from RealClearPolitics:

SEN. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on the DISCLOSE Act: “I believe there ought to be limits because the First Amendment is not absolute. No amendment is absolute. You can’t scream ‘fire’ falsely in a crowded theater. We have libel laws. We have anti-pornography laws. All of those are limits on the First Amendment. Well, what could be more important than the wellspring of our democracy? And certain limits on First Amendment rights that if left unfettered, destroy the equality — any semblance of equality in our democracy — of course would be allowed by the Constitution.”

“And the new theorists on the Supreme Court who don’t believe that, I am not sure where their motivation comes from, but they are just so wrong. They are just so wrong.”

Obama makes it illegal for U.S. citizens to criticize the government of Yemen.

Our imperial president decrees another executive order that should be making headlines, but of course, merely moves forward his agenda of limiting free speech. In a wonderfully written piece by Salon, the tale is told as to the objective of Obama’s edict. It is well worth the full read, and gives the past Supreme Court decision that gives him the boldness to do this.

What’s most amazing about all of this is how covert it is. What percentage of Americans even know that the Obama administration is continuously bombing and killing civilians in Yemen, or that American soldiers are now on the ground there in an advisory capacity?

An Executive order seeks to punish U.S. citizens even for “indirectly” obstructing dictatorial rule in Yemen.

THe WH has blocked the direct link to the full order, however one can find it below. Look for May 16, 2012

UPDATE 2: Here is the live link:Executive Order 13611

In other words, the U.S. Government will now punish anyone who is determined — in the sole discretion of the U.S. Government — even to “indirectly” obstruct the full transition of power to President Hadi. But what if someone — a Yemeni or an American — opposes Hadi’s rule and wants to agitate for a real election in which more than one candidate runs? Is that pure political advocacy, as it appears, now prohibited by the U.S. Government, punishable by serious sanctions, on the ground that it “obstructs” the transition of power to Hadi? Can journalists who report on corruption or violence by the Hadi regime and who write Op-Eds demanding a new election be accused, as it seems, of “threatening Yemen’s political stability”?

As it does with most U.S.-compliant dictators in the region, the Obama administration has since been propping up Hadi with large amounts of money and military assistance, but it is now taking a much more extreme step to ensure he remains entrenched in power — a step that threatens not only basic liberties in Yemen but in the U.S. as well:

President Obama issued an executive order Wednesday giving the Treasury Department authority to freeze the U.S.-based assets of anyone who “obstructs” implementation of the administration-backed political transition in Yemen.

The unusual order, which administration officials said also targets U.S. citizens who engage in activity deemed to threaten Yemen’s security or political stability, is the first issued for Yemen that does not directly relate to counterterrorism.

Jeremy Scahill, who has reported extensively from Yemen over the last year, reacted to the news of this Executive Order this morning by writing: ”This Executive Order appears to be an attack on Americans’ 1st Amendment Rights and Yemenis’ rights to self-determination

‘End of free speech’ signed by Obama

I caught Judge Napolatano on Fox this morning who once again warns us of the creep spread to limit our freedom of speech. Anyone else hear about this bill?  The bottom line is now Obama can give Secret Service protection to anyone. At that point, no one dare say a peep essentially. Let me get off the soap box and let you read this foul thing. Did the GOPers really approve this?

Here is the link to GOV Track with text, the history and the two votes taken: H.R.347  The totals were 388 Ayes, 3 Nays, 42 Present/Not Voting. Vote Details.

Feb 6, 2012: This bill passed in the Senate with changes by Unanimous Consent. A record of each senator’s position was not kept

Update: The Sentry Journal has done a great post including an analysis of this and with the video from Napolatano “While we were distracted did we lose free speech?

Jonathan Turley’s blog page notes that the imprecise language, just as in the NDAA, creates risks and can most definitely be seen as a threat to our First Amendment right to Free Speech, Freedom of Assembly, and Freedom to Petition our government. None of that is very comforting in light of the Patriot Act and surveillance of and wire tapping of Americans.”  H.R 347 could be making the First Amendment illegal UPDATE: Turley removed his post and replaced it. Guts !

Significantly, though, the definition of “restricted buildings” is anywhere someone protected by the Secret Service “will be temporarily visiting.”

“A person eating in a diner while a presidential candidate is trying to score political points with the locals could be arrested if government agents determine that he is acting ‘disorderly.’ Mind you, depending on who’s making the assessment, anything can be considered disorderly, including someone exercising his right to free speech by muttering to himself about a government official. And if that person happens to have a pocketknife or nail clippers in his possession (or any other innocuous item that could be interpreted by the police as ‘dangerous’), he could face up to 10 years in prison,” Whitehead warned.

“Tonight you no longer need to be a conspiracy theorist to have real questions about whether we are becoming a police state.”

In a terse online statement, the White House has confirmed that Barack Obama has signed into law an update of restrictions around the White House, the vice president’s resident and other locations – a move critics say signals the “end to free speech.”

The White House said yesterday Obama “signed into law: H.R. 347, the ‘Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011,’ which makes it a federal crime to enter or remain knowingly in any restricted area of the White House, the vice president’s official residence, or their respective grounds without lawful authority.”

“Current law makes it illegal to enter or remain in an area where certain government officials (more particularly, those with Secret Service protection) will be visiting temporarily if and only if the person knows it’s illegal to enter the restricted area but does so anyway,” he said. “The bill expands current law to make it a crime to enter or remain in an area where an official is visiting even if the person does not know it’s illegal to be in that area and has no reason to suspect it’s illegal. Obama Shuts Down Voice of America Broadcast to China

Anyone still wondering who is running our government? I thought Hilliary and Zero were all for stirring up the masses? Obama and a Search Engine get you am Egyptian Revolution.  China demands, and Obama bows. Recall:

Yahoo newsChina approved for 1.2 Billion investment in Morgan Stanley

The cables, obtained by WikiLeaks, show that escalating Chinese pressure prompted a procession of soothing visits from the U.S.Treasury Department. In one striking instance, a top Chinese money manager directly asked U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner for a favor.

In June, 2009, the head of China’s powerful sovereign wealth fund met with Geithner and requested that he lean on regulators at the U.S. Federal Reserve to speed up the approval of its $1.2 billion investment in Morgan Stanley, according to the cables, which were provided to Reuters by a third party.

The decision to cut VOA’s shortwave broadcast to China is not about fiscal responsibility, but instead about appeasing the leaders of the Chinese Communist Party, according to Dana Rohrabacher, a Republican from California.

“This is clearly not a budget cut, this is clearly an effort to gain favor with dictators by catering to their desires,” he said in an interview. “And their desire is: no criticism.”

Online commentators have pointed out how the BBC’s decision to sideline its China shortwave service also corresponded with the visit to England of Li Keqiang, the apparatchik next in line for the premiership. Both lines of speculation are unconfirmed.

“The fact that our leadership has proposed this reduction in the broadcast services in VOA to the people of China so shortly after a visit paid here by a leader of the Communist Party of China, Mr. Hu, should let people understand that this is not simply something that was in the works and it was a budget cut,” Mr. Rohrabacher said. “What we’re seeing is the product of a deal between the President of the United States, and a dictator who holds power with an iron fist.”
