Nursing homes and retirement communities now death traps – over 7,000 COVID deaths

I heard Dr. Sapphire on Fox news yesterday say that people with Covid 19 were transferred to nursing homes. A story to be told.

As many of my readers know I live in a large retirement community which includes continuing care – thus a nursing “home” with various levels of care is included. More about my situation, but let’s get to how we got here.

Nursing homes have become the dumping ground for hospitals who have taken their pound of Medicare – they receive a flat rate, more if patient is on a vent- and then must find a way to get rid of them.

Enter Democrat Governors from New York, New Jersey and Virginia.

Nursing homes have been the sites of some of the earliest — and deadliest — outbreaks of COVID-19. Some people who run such facilities are understandably leery of accepting new patients who might spread the virus.

Nonetheless, some of the largest states are now ordering nursing homes to accept patients who have been discharged from the hospital but are still recovering from COVID-19.

These state directives have been strongly condemned by the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care MedicineDr. Sabine von Preyss, chief medical officer for Avalon Health Care Group and president of the society’s Washington state chapter, says that a distinction must be made between nursing homes that have suffered COVID-19 outbreaks and those that are still virus-free.

“The question is, should we be forced to introduce a disease with such deadly potential into a population that has been sheltered?” says von Preyss. “And my experience tells me that would be ill-advised.”

Think about this:

Half Of Virginia’s Coronavirus Outbreaks Are In Long-Term Care Facilities

Now that we have established these facts, let’s back up a bit.

The first warning of the devastation that the coronavirus could wreak inside US nursing homes came in late February, when residents of a facility in suburban Seattle perished, one by one, as families waited helplessly outside.

In the ensuing six weeks, large and shockingly lethal outbreaks have continued to ravage nursing homes across the nation, undeterred by urgent new safety requirements. Now a nationwide tally by The New York Times has found the number of people living in or connected to nursing homes who have died of the coronavirus to be at least 7,000, far higher than previously known.

It is a tragedy that is continuing to unfold, and one that even the dire figures that are known only partially capture. The number of cases at these facilities — which include nursing homes, assisted-living facilities, memory care facilities, retirement and senior communities and long-term rehabilitation facilities — is almost certainly still higher since many facilities, counties and states have not provided detailed information.

The outbreaks have been spread across the sprawling senior-care industry, including at publicly run facilities, those run by nonprofit groups and others managed by large corporations.

All of these factors have allowed the virus to thrive, making its way into at least 4,100 US nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, despite increasingly desperate efforts to stop the spread.

Relocating patients with COVID-19 to nursing homes

Here I am in bucolic Amish country – Lancaster County…..more retirement communities and nursing homes per square mile than anywhere else in Pennsylvania. I myself live in an Independent living situation within the retirement community. Lucky me.  Now the secret.

The Lancaster County coroner said more than 80% of the COVID-19 deaths in Lancaster County have occurred in patients at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.

Dr. Stephen Diamantoni said the largest number of deaths have happened in Lancaster Township, and three facilities have been hit especially hard.

At Conestoga View on East King Street, 24 patients have died.

Hamilton Arms on South West End Avenue reports that 20 residents have died, and another 40 patients and 24 staff members tested positive for COVID-19.

The virus has claimed 15 lives at ManorCare Health Services on Abbeyville Road.

The truth? Sadly there is no required reporting of nursing home Covid  illness and deaths for most states. We have no idea of the total number. Just the States that have reported.

While we hear the death report with our evening dinner every night, and how we must play the game of useless masks and distancing… by the way no N95 masks are available here for anyone that I see, let alone surgical masks, yet they are mandatory….We were told to “make our masks.” No one has any idea that their hand made cloth masks are a potential method of infecting themselves and clueless how to make themselves safe.

So I sit on death row…… a knock on the door, food left and the deliverer disappears into the distance. Yet no news about testing of the employees who will sooner or later  visit the plague upon us.The gnashing of teeth about testing. But not for us or the employees. So we wait…….when its all done, we will be forgotten.

I doubt we, living here, have time for herd immunity to help us out.

Oh by the way…… We have a Progressive Democrat Governor too….

My wife works in an assisted living home which just opened last year. They were still taking in patients when this all happened and they have put a halt on taking in more until this is over. That is a logical step so naturally the government wants to put more people in these homes, why am I not surprised?

First, glad you’re still well. Understand the threat you’re in.
But as you mention about long time readers. Fun recalling or/and funny how we got here, where we are. (State income tax, pleasant weather…er…hurricanes!).
Be safe, wear your mask to open the door. 🙂

My friend and neighbor has his mom in an assisted living facility.
    She is 100 yrs old!
She hasn’t seen him in a month and wonders why.
She fell two nights ago and broke four ribs, dislodging two.
She’s in the hospital but will be returned.
    And she feels abandoned.
I’m thinking she’s going to die of a broken heart.
I’m sure it will be listed as Covid-19.

Good chance……. but still many of these homes are being impacted by the Progressive governors who are deliberating putting documented Covid patients in nursing homes… I can attest to it here in Lancaster county per the medical examiner who ran tests.

Just today or newspaper reported that one nursing home here in Lakeland just sent 35 patients to the hospital with C-19. This week is our scheduled “peak” week and it kicked off with that headline. Florida is sometimes called “God’s waiting room” and we do have a lot of nursing home and retirement communities. This mess is a sad testimony to caring for our aging population. Our 55+ community has 400 separate homes and so far we have only heard of one C-19 case. Our clubhouse and pool have been closed since the second week of March and most people are staying home. Time will tell.

How many of these deaths are real coronavirus deaths and how many are DeBlasio numbers added without confirming the true cause of death?

I agree that the numbers are no doubt in question…. Still these patients are dying of no doubt respiratory diseases. of some kind… to put patients that have tested positive of Covid makes little sense to me…. its the process of dumping that upsets me…. I do know the Lancaster numbers are accurate as was discussed in our local news….
Still NYC is a whole different ball game…

The last time I was in the hospital with pneumonia, something over two years ago, a guy showed up bedside and announced he was one of my doctors and was a “hospitalist.” I had not invited him, did not really want him, but I later wound up paying for him. He saw me daily along with my pulmonologist, and all he ever did was piss me off.

On day one, when my temp was 104, he pronounced that I would “clearly not be able to take care of myself” after discharge and would have to be sent to a nursing home. He said that in front of my wife, and she was horribly upset. I will admit that I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer when my temp has been 104 for several days and I have IVs in both arms, but…

He continued to blather about the freaking nursing home, listing availabilities and demanding that we pick one, the whole time I was there (a little over two weeks), and keeping my wife in a state of near hysteria. He pretty much convinced her she was on the verge of becoming a widow, effectively if not actually.

As I was improved to the point of nearing discharge, my wife and I are like, “What’s are you talking about? We can manage just fine at home.” He was adamant that we could not, and said I would be evaluated by physical therapy dept the next day, and that would prove I could not. You can pretty much guess what happened. I passed the test, and the effing “hospitalist” even told us that, “Unfortunately, they say you can go home.” What kind of doctor says that?

My pulmonary doctor said that “of course” I should go home. He’s been treating me since 2004. He did make me take an oxygen tank home with me and use it for a couple of months.

If we had one decent reporter to raise the issue at Trump’s presser, but no….Some states forbid the reporting of nursing home Covid deaths,,,maybe ask that question someone?
I just read that where I previously lived outside Phila…the National Guard has come into the nursing homes it is so bad…..yet the story is buried in a local freebie newsletter….thats all… Its all bout NYC and NJ and CA.

Discussing this with my folks last night about this…here in Hornell, (it’s fine, dont mind stating where) 27 deaths, 27 DEATHS FROM THE TWO NURSING HOMES! 27! not one Hornellian has contacted the Wuhan Virus, NOT ONE. Completley distrubed by this, and do you know, NY State is NOT conducting autopsies. AND yet, here we are, under house arrest. The paper stated 40 nurses and doctors of these two nursing homes have been tested and show no signs. WHATS UP WITH THAT? HUH? Now, I am not saying this virus isnt real, but what I am saying is, there is no way of telling what these 27 residents died of. They are automatically listed as Covid 19 deaths.

On another front…our Walmart now has county sheriff deputies enforcing the Executive Mask Order by Cuomo; 1st warning, 2nd is $500 fine, 3rd is jail. When we got home, (for whatever reason my prescription did not get mailed out) our son who was out exercising/riding his bike got pulled over for NOT wearing a mask and or not obeying curfew. WARNING. So, you tell me, what is this all about? My dad said, “Linda, this is police state, get the hell out when you can.” These power hungry folks arent even following the directives t hemselves. We are allowed to be outside, we are allowed to exercise, we are allowed not to wear masks when doing so. I’m telling you, Bunk, Orwellian.

Whether the flu or some poison the Chinese have sent over, the end result is the same and the desire to finish off the seniors is getting more apparent to me… For Governors to send very sick patients to nursing facilities who are known to be contagious…. keep in mind, these patients transferred tested positive… is criminal… In Lancaster, my understanding from the local news is that these patients did test positive..
My hunch is the game works this way….. Nursing homes must take the Covid patients if the want to get any of the profitable payer mix (otherwise known as patients) in the future…. thats how it is played…

Most nursing homes are dependent on Medicaid reimbursement and barely hanging on financially…. I am blessed to live in a private well endowed funded community. Still, this is no less than a tragedy that few care about.
