Veterans Day – “Hymn to the Fallen”

Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served. For one day, we stand united in respect for our veterans. This video captures the terrible price so many have paid and are paying so we can be free.

These are American Cemeteries around the world and the number of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. I suggest watching this in full screen to appreciate the enormity of it all. Staggering.

“Hymn to the Fallen” by John Williams.

This holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country’s service and was originally called Armistice Day. It fell on Nov. 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. However, in 1954, the holiday was changed to “Veterans Day” in order to account for all veterans in all wars.

We celebrate and honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

The restaurants listed at  Parade   are offering free or discounted meals to Veterans on Veterans Day.  Spread the word!

Each restaurant has different offerings, so be sure to look into each one specifically to make sure you’re eligible to take advantage of their veteran’s day discounts and freebies!

My dad served during the “Korean Conflict” in the Air Force as a mechanic. After his death, I saw his honorable discharge papers as a Sergeant. While he was alive, all he ever mentioned was that it was “damned cold.”

No one I know talked about it much… All I heard from my father was the “Korean Boots.” Apparently a new development that we used similar for hunting and was a much approved boot compared to previous boots.

The numbers are staggering. Almost all the men who attend the history club on Wed. with me are vets. Their stories are heartbreaking.

About a quarter of the way through I realized the numbers were only going up. So many individuals, and how many when we add in the friends and loved ones of these fallen.
