We haven’t had much color here in my neck of the woods. We just had our first frost this past week. The leaves are turning more brown than with color. A bit of a disappointment. This song though, brings back memories of many beautiful falls.

Originally it was a 1945 French song, “fr:Les feuilles mortes” (literally “The Dead Leaves”), with music by Hungarian-French composer Joseph Kosma and lyrics by poet Jacques Prévert. The Hungarian title is “Hulló levelek” (Falling Leaves). Yves Montand (with Irène Joachim) introduced “Les feuilles mortes” in the film Les Portes de la nuit (1946)

On a sadder note: A bit long but hopefully you can bear with me.
My wife of Colombian descent along with her mother, father (deceased) and two sisters have been here for forty years, all proud citizens of American. They have relatives living in Venezuela who chose to move there rather than the US due to it being a neighbor of Colombia with a strong vibrant economy with plenty of jobs and opportunity and a democracy not unlike the US. Yesterday their cousin’s daughter gave birth to a baby girl and both mother and baby had to leave the hospital that same day, yesterday. Even though the father is a policeman they have no insurance and no money. Starting this past summer our family here has been sending life sustaining medicine for the 91 year old matriarch since there is no money and no medicine on hand there. After a lengthy face-time call yesterday we will be shipping powdered milk and eggs-there is no milk or eggs to be had there-baby’s formula, vitamins, chocolate and assorted nutritional items as well as sneakers and blouses, towels etc for which they have no money to replace these now worn out articles, on a monthly basis along with the medicine through legal channels.
Along with Cuba’s workers paradise and Venezuela the Demorat commies campaigning for their party’s nomination have working models of what they want to bring down upon our heads and with 50%+ of Americans out to lunch they may very well do so. Thank you Comrade Bernie et al for what you have in mind for all of us-except for loyal party members of course.

I cannot think of a single example where socialist centered ideology has benefitted any society. Despite this over-arching fact, socialism is a great platform for inanities and a flower lined avenue for achieving (police) power. All one has to do is promise “free shit” to voters, and they’ll line up for socialism every single time. My heart aches for your family, Peter … but, as a result of my studies in Spanish-American history and culture, nothing you’ve described surprises me —and this is (mournfully) true all the way back to the arrival of Cortez in the New World.

There’s a Netflix miseries “Bolivar” currently running. While a but tedious and over romanticized it does portray from what I know of the history of South America an accurate portrayal of life under Spaniard rule and the subsequent fight for independence from Spain in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Here’s a song we sang in the second grade in 1958 as we celebrated the leaves changing color:
Trees are gold ripe chestnuts are falling,
Grasses are brown leaves flutter down
Through the town the bonfires are burning
Winter draws near autumn is here.
My five year old grandson sings this with me now as did my two sons, now grown.
An achronism in today’s world.,

We sang a very similar song in 1959, when I was in third grade in Teaneck, NJ. Our version went:
Trees are gold, ripe chestnuts are falling
Summer is done, autumn’s begun
High above, the wild geese are calling
Winter is near, autumn is here
Do you know what that song was called or anything else about it”
