The latest to worry the wacko left. Overuse of the Solar System. How soon before the kiddies in school start being driven to protest this activity?
Space Mining Could Ruin Our Solar System If We Don’t Establish Protected Places Now, Researchers Warn.
A study finds that it is in peril of overexploitation:
The study, published April 16 in the journal Acta Astronautica, makes a case for designating 85% of our solar system a protected “wilderness” akin to Earth’s national parks, leaving just one-eighth of eligible planets, moons and asteroids free to be mined or developed by human interests.
According to the study, humans could deplete the solar system of all of its water, iron and other mineable resources in a matter of centuries — potentially leaving the solar system a dried-up wasteland in as little as 500 years.
“Then, we are done,” warn the authors.
Highlights
- • Solar System resources are vast, but finite.
- •Normal exponential growth suggests 400 years before exhaustion is approached.
- •Prudent to adopt a “1/8 Principle” as a tripwire: “Do not exploit >1/8 of solar system”.
- •Rest should be left as Wilderness.
- •Many ethical and practical questions must then be dealt with.
“How much of the Solar System should we reserve as wilderness, off-limits to human development?” We make a general argument that, as a matter of fixed policy, development should be limited to one eighth, with the remainder set aside. We argue that adopting a “one-eighth principle” is far less restrictive, overall, than it might seem. One eighth of the iron in the asteroid belt is more than a million times greater than all of the Earth’s currently estimated iron ore reserves, and it may well suffice for centuries. A limit of some sort is necessary because of the problems associated with exponential growth.
For the convoluted math wander over to the “journal” link Acta Astronautica,

I’m laughing SO hard because I saw the title and thought you were serious! I’m thinking “ARE YOU KIDDING ME? THIS is an issue?” Then I read carefully and started laughing. I should have known better, of course. Oh, my GOSH, another thing to WORRY ABOUT!~ 🙂 Very good, Bunk! I AGREE, let’s hope the Dems make this an issue in the coming campaigns….wouldn’t you love to see how Trump treated THAT?
I saw Larry Elder speak a few years back, the Conservative audience was loving him up until he said, seriously, “I think we should sell a lot of our preserves (not marmalade, by the way!!!) to the Chinese,” at which time 300 people’s jaws dropped and he dropped the issue! WHAT? This reminded me of that!

I dunno Z, Back in the obama days, 30% of Americans were convinced we’d be visited by aliens, and that obama was the right man for the job of dealing with them. I’m serious.

Z..
I don’t think China should get anything, but the government owns two thirds of the west,, something wrong with that and up for some consideration. Just thinking out loud.

Well…good. What has the solar system ever done for us? /snark 🙂

I have a feeling the rate we are going it will be the other way around… but hey, a least the SS sent us some good vibes and some carbon apparently.

Okay…okay….I’ll give ya carbon and good vibes.
But it’s not like the solar system gave us aqueducts, sanitation, roads, irrigation, medicine, education, health, wine, public baths and public safety. 🙂 🙂

I read an article yesterday making the case that there is so much untapped resource on Earth, that it will be eons before it becomes more economical to mine in space.
Then of course you have the Xeonomorph to deal with.
Fun to think about like searching for Earthlike planets, you know in case we have to move. Well there aren’t any within 12 light years away if even that. A light year is 5.8 trillion miles. We can’t even get someone to Mars and have them arrive in any kind of healthful condition. As my pal AOC says, we need to stop spending money on this crap and divert it to the climate emergency.

I thought of you when I caught this… I know you are the star man.. I still think we may find a way to speed up travel.. I have read some theories.. Lets put AOC on the first ship out… 🙂

Then tell the universe to stop throwing things at us!
And which particular 1/8th did they have in mind?
The part that doesn’t have the resources to cure cancer, alleviate poverty, reduce mining on earth?

I have to say that based on historical data, by which I mean the amount of space mining earth men have done over the past 4.5 billion years, space objects are in very serious danger of being eaten up, much in the way of Pac Man. Gobbling up the universe’s orbs will definitely cause problems down the road. Something must be done. Something must be done now. Right now. And this, I think, could solve our Di Blasio problem. There is no one more qualified than he to shepherd this important project through. He should get right on it. Tomorrow. Hold on for a second while my eyeballs stop rolling around.

I think the Dem Prez candidates need to make this a major platform issue.. Maybe the candidate from Wyoming that I posted about a day or so ago could take this on.
Interesting that they have a clue how much Iron ore is out there..last I heard… checking checking checking…. 🙂
