Vatican wheels and deals with China, meantime, China shutting down churches

It’s interesting that the AP just yesterday was reporting on the crack down on Christianity. At the same time, The Pope is wheeling and dealing with China.

In deference to my Catholic readers I have deferred on commenting on much of the Vatican’s dealings and goings on. Catholicism is a personal matter. Let the Catholics deal with their Socialist. But this one is a puzzle that I can’t ignore. Is this a Protestant versus Catholic deal?Any thoughts?

Is Tawain on the table as far as recognition? What has Rome promised for this? The same as Goggle? Excuse me for being cynical. What’s the deal? First the AP news:

BEIJING (AP) — China’s government is ratcheting up a crackdown on Christian congregations in Beijing and several provinces, destroying crosses, burning bibles, shutting churches and ordering followers to sign papers renouncing their faith, according to pastors and a group that monitors religion in China.

The campaign corresponds with a drive to “Sinicize” religion by demanding loyalty to the officially atheist Communist Party and eliminating any challenge to its power over people’s lives.

Bob Fu of the U.S.-based group China Aid said over the weekend that the closure of churches in central Henan province and a prominent house church in Beijing in recent weeks represents a “significant escalation” of the crackdown.

“The international community should be alarmed and outraged for this blatant violation of freedom of religion and belief,” he wrote in an email.

Under President Xi Jinping, China’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong, religious believers are seeing their freedoms shrink dramatically even as the country undergoes a religious revival. Experts and activists say that as he consolidates his power, Xi is waging the most severe systematic suppression of Christianity in the country since religious freedom was written into the Chinese constitution in 1982.

Fu also provided video footage of what appeared to be piles of burning bibles and forms stating that the signatories had renounced their Christian faith. He said that marked the first time since Mao’s radical 1966-1976 Cultural Revolution that Christians had been compelled to make such declarations, under pain of expulsion from school and the loss of welfare benefits.

A Christian pastor in the Henan city of Nanyang said crosses, bibles and furniture were burned during a raid on his church on Sept. 5.

And then we have this?

China and Vatican to Sign Landmark Deal Over Bishops
China and the Vatican are set to sign a landmark agreement later this month ending a long struggle between Beijing’s Communist rulers and the pope over who chooses the leaders of Catholicism in the world’s most populous country, according to two people familiar with the matter.Reactions to the deal, which gives both sides a say in appointing the church’s bishops in China, are likely to be sharply divided, with some hailing a diplomatic coup by the Vatican that draws China closer to the West and others warning of an important defeat for the principle of religious freedom.

The controversial deal would include the first official recognition by Beijing that the pope is the head of the Catholic Church in China. In return, Pope Francis would formally recognize seven excommunicated Chinese bishops who were appointed by the Communist government without Vatican approval.

Another take:

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Vatican and China look set to sign a landmark agreement later this month intended to reunite China’s state-backed Catholic church with the “underground” church that is still loyal to Rome, and which operates without official state approval.

While the deal could still fall through or be delayed by “unforeseen events,” it could mean that Beijing recognizes the pope as the head of the Catholic Church in China, the paper said.

Such a concession would be matched by the recognition and rehabilitation of seven Chinese bishops who were excommunicated by the pope after being appointed by Beijing without the approval of the Vatican, it said.

A deal seems likely.

This pope is causing massive problems for the Catholic folks. For starters every pedophile sodomite needs to be fired, yet the pope is ragging on the victims? Geeez.

Joe and I are Catholic and we both have huge problems with the Pope, the Vatican, and all that has been going on. It’s hard for me to attend Mass these days. I don’t have any answers.

Not much difference for me as well as a Protestant. Its all about social justice and blaming and to fix it all, its done in the name of Christianity. I just can’t go there.

I am a Catholic as well and living in a sanctuary city means that many of the masses are in Spanish and French (or Creole) and those that are in English can barely be understood because the priests have such thick accents.

They also cater to a community of immigrants. The Catholic Church puts more emphasis on building a congregation full of refugees rather than rescuing souls. Then as if that’s not bad enough, here comes the perverts and Francis.

It puts you in a real bind as a catholic… at least we Protestants can “shop” around in good faith to find a Church that we believe comports with a value system we can share.
I have a rather eclectic take on religion anyway… Certainly adhere to Christianity,, but believe there are aspects of other faiths that seeks a truth that is not antithetical to Christianity.

Well, where we are in this is that all human enterprises become political after about the first five seconds of their existence; it is in our nature. I was quite frankly put-off earlier today while reading my church bulletin, wherein it was announced that there would be a monthly Palestine Friendship Meeting in a week or so … because Palestinians are entitled blah de blah de blah and Israel is a bad humma humma humma. Now I personally don’t care that people congregate to discuss whatever it is that rings their bell, but I do resent the politicalization of religion and I would not have minded at all the announcement had they not presented only ONE SIDE of a political issue. I suppose it is also true that I don’t like Arabs very much no matter what country they come from. In this case, the Pope (who is naïve to the point of being dangerous) thinks that it is in his (the Church’s) best interest to make a deal with China’s leadership, and they in turn think that there is something to be gained for themselves, as well … so I say let’s break out the popcorn and beer, pull up an easy chair, and watch the show.

This one has intrigued me non the less… Agreed, little to do with Jesus and a lot more to do with a political agenda. I have scouted around and find little. So, I will do the same, bring out the popcorn and watch the show.

I was going to say the same, Peter. No sense in repeating it. The Catholic church has been falling for years now…as is America…no sense in repeating that thought either.

Surely the benevolent Chicoms must have a retirement home for impeached popes. This commie in the Vatican has done for the papacy what Bubba did for the of the presidency that is they have diminished greatly the reverence and respect for these respective offices. The disrespect and damage our first black preside garnered for the office was only outdone by our first mulatto president while Francis’ duplicity and betrayal of the once perceived sanctity if the papacy is unmatched since the medieval popes.

While I agree… in not such a colorful description… I am trying to figure this one out. China does nothing unless they gain something. I give them that. But I give them not Christian souls. Thats my limit.

While not a bible thumper nor a Sunday mass attendee in years, I was born and raised Roman catholic. The disrespect this charlatan has brought to the church is for me unforgivable. What is a shame is that so many are blinded by their faith and unable to see what is happening right before their eyes.
