Sunday Respite – ‘Fruitcake from Hell’

The fruitcake was a standard part of our Holiday tradition when growing up. In my neck of the woods, this tradition seems to be waning. For sure, there were some excellent ones out there, steeped in bourbon, rum or other fine spirits. For others well…

It’s more complicated than I ever knew. Momma made one each year. and all I remember is the cherries and pineapple pieces. Now that you mention it, I haven’t seen Civitans selling them anymore. I always liked it. Little and easy to carry. CCW 🙂

I love fruitcake, the darker and the larger the fruit in it, the better! I know there are all sorts of jokes about them, using them as door stops all year, etc! Maybe it’s because my husband was from Germany and I started enjoying Stollen, which is kind of their answer to fruitcake (and really delicious, too, if it doesn’t have as much marzipan as some do!)

I love a good cake as well. Love Stollen and all the German pastries. Maybe its the marzipan that makes it so heavy at times, I know they can be a rock.

But a typical stollen weighs about a third of a typical fruitcake, right? A neighbor gave me a stollen for Christmas and it had a string of marzipan running thru it and I’m not a big marzipan fan……I could eat AROUND it. I had to put the whole darned Stollen in the freezer so I’d STOP eating it…am having 8 girlfriends for my Fifth annual ‘ladies night at Z’s’ dinner and libations next Monday ….and I’ll slice it thinly along with other desserts so THEY can put it on THEIR hips 🙂 Ach du Lieber Gott!!!

This years, after many years of deprivation, Mr. AOW and I enjoyed the best fruitcake ever: the type baked and steeped in bourbon, made with loving hands by my cousin. Definitely not a breakfast cake! LOL.

My mom made a good fruitcake (well – as good as fruit cake could be.) I was going to make it once using her recipe. After loading up the cart with all the ingredients, I discovered that I couldn’t afford to make fruitcake and put the stuff back on the shelf. This was many, many years ago, and boy-o-boy was that stuff expensive!

That being said, I don’t believe I saw one single solitary fruitcake this year in any store.
