Anyone out there remember Barry Goldwater and his Presidential race? Oh, how he was mocked, and a sleazy T.V. ad, some other wrong turns gave us Lyndon Johnson and his Great Society. “None dare call it Treason” was the “in” book to read for those of Barry’s persuasion. I thought myself lucky enough to be in the Senate Gallery at the time of a roll call, and there was Barry, my family’s hero, many years after his Presidential race. Later I met him in the hallway. Yes, the great unwashed could still mix with the elites in those days. I think it was the Chad Mitchell Trio who first sang “Barry’s Boy’s.” But this rendition will do for a Sunday respite.

During the 64′ election I was a highly informed 13 year old who, as a newspaper carrier boy, read the paper every morning front to back. The general consensus among adults as I remember it was that we would face WWIII if AuH2O was elected. The propoganda worked and the rest is history. My brother, two years older, as well as several of our friends hated President Johnson though I don’t remember exactly why.
If there was any justice the bald eagle would be replaced with the lemming as the symbol of america.

The lemming is a fitting symbol. The Dems knew how to portray conservatives as war mongers. Yet it was the Johnson who got us into the Vietnam war up to our eyeballs.

How Americans were ever capable of electing Ronald Reagan is a mystery. I guess the peanut farmer helped us. One conservative president in the Barry Goldwater mold. Reagan was still popular at the end of his administration and what did the GOP offer in his place? It’s been down hill ever since.

So many ifs. If Kennedy had not been killed… One can only wonder. The great society, the Vietnam war.. How would that have played.
