Air Force Senior Airman Nicholas J. Alden, 25, of Williamston, S.C., died March 2 as a result of a shooting at Frankfurt Airport, Germany, while en route to Afghanistan. He was assigned to 48th Security Forces Squadron, RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom.
Sad Update: Tragedy struck Trish Alden once more as her 2-year-old son died in an accident Saturday.
Alden’s husband and the boy’s father, Senior Airman Nick Alden of Williamston, was killed in a terrorist attack at a Frankfurt, Germany, airport in March 2011.
Alden and her family were preparing Saturday to leave for a vacation in Georgia, said Don McCown, deputy Anderson County coroner.
“They were trying to get away for a while,” he said.
It would have been the first time they had taken a vacation since Alden was shot and killed by a recently convicted terrorist.
William John Alden was trying to reach something on the top of a dresser in the family’s Anderson home, McCown said. The boy ended up pinned by the dresser drawers and died of asphyxiation, he said. Independen Mail
The state court in Frankfurt convicted 22-year-old Arid Uka of two counts of murder. It also found him guilty of three counts of attempted murder and serious bodily harm for wounding two other servicemen and taking aim at a third before his 9 mm pistol jammed.
That means he won’t immediately be eligible for parole after 15 years as is usual in Germany.
Uka smiled and chatted with his lawyers before and after the sentence was announced, then sat with his eyes closed and his head downturned as the judge detailed his reasoning.
