Obama cites International Permission rather than Congress re: Syria

The Republican Mother found these chestnuts that are worth taking a look at since the Middle East is getting hotter by the day, and our Congress is getting more impotent by the day. It is clearly stated that Obama and Panetta believe they have the right to engage in Syria without Congressional approval. But why be surprised. Isn’t that how Libya and Egypt got mucked up big time? Jeff Sessions does a wonderful smack down. Then a clip of Lou Dobbs and the Judge’s reaction  follows.

Secretary of Defense Panetta saying “our goal would be to seek international permission and we would come to the Congress to inform you and determine how best to approach this, whether or not we would want to get permission from the Congress….”

Notice at the end, Panetta retorts that the President has the ultimate authority to deploy the military if the US is threatened.

WASHINGTON, March 7—Under question from Sen. Sessions at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing today, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey indicated that “international permission,” rather than Congressional approval, provided a ‘legal basis’ for military action by the United States.

And now we have the Judge and Lou Dobbs reaction

WASHINGTON, March 9—On “Lou Dobbs Tonight”, Lou Dobbs and Judge Andrew Napolitano addressed an exchange on Wednesday between Sen. Sessions and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta regarding the Obama Administration’s apparent belief that “international permission,” but not congressional approval, is a necessary precondition for any military action by the United States.

Thanks for the link and highlighting this important information.

To answer the question of where the Tea Party representatives are, they came to a gunfight with a penknife. This thing is way, way, WAY bigger than Obama. What we’re witnessing is the tail end of a 100 year game plan to transform the United States so that it would be merged into a one world government. If you review the historical record, you’ll find these UN and League of Nations people saying that this is exactly what they planned to do all along.

We have to play out the hand dealt as best we can. As you say this started a long time ago, and unless we can awaken the folks, we are toast. If it was hopeless, then there is no reason to blog.

  2. Steve Dennis Says:

It really says something about Obama when he feels he can dictate to the Congress what US laws willbe, yet at the same time is willing to ask permission from the UN before doing anything internationally.

    • Bunkerville Says:

Especially just before his reelection. They have no fear because other than a handful of us, no one is paying attention.

  3. Geo Says:

We can all thank George Bush 41 for this thinking, when he personally sort the approval and a coalition out of the U.N. for the first Gulf War. Then Bubba for the very first time “placed” U.S. Troops under the operational control of a foreign power. Then 43 continued the charade even after receiving authority from the Congress decided to go to the U.N. and obtain their approval [though I do believe he would've gone without any].

We have been heading down this road for a long time now, it should come as no surprise to anyone that this group of radicals believes in this. Libs have for years sort to diminish our sovereignty to anyone because they have never believed in “American Exceptionalism”.

I personally believe the War Powers Act is unconstitutional, but nobody has decided to challenge it since it was passed. They have deliberately avoided a show down on it [both parties]. The weasels running things in Washington hasn’t made a Declaration of War, since WWII and I don’t believe anyone will ever see one again. But they are all to willing to subvert our Country’s sovereignty to any group of despots they can find.

    • Bunkerville Says:

Thanks for your well thought out comment. As you so well put, Bush was just as much up to his eyeballs in setting us down this road.

  4. Conservatives on Fire Says:

This is very disturbing. Not only is the President assuming powerrs he doesn’t have under the constitution; but he is surrendering our sovereignty to foreign (international) organizations. This is an outrage and I too want to know where are our Tea Party Republicans?

    • Steve Dennis Says:

This must be the “global test” John Kerry talked about when he was running for president!

  5. Always On Watch Says:

Obama is going to do as he damn well pleases because he knows that his getting re-elected is getting iffier and iffier.

    Batten down the hatches.

    • bunkerville Says:

I dread the lame duck Congress. Just imagine the treaties that will be signed and approved by the senate.

  6. Kurt Silverfiddle Says:

This is the danger of blanket authority, which Congress granted President Bush and that continues with Obama. Congress, instead of bleating about it, could simply pull the authority, but they won’t.

    • bunkerville Says:

I keep wondering why, and where are our dear Tea Party folks? We are toast if we have four more of this total nonsense. You are so right. Bush started this. Osama did more damage to our country than the bombing of the twin towers.
